CHAPTER 18
MORRIGAN
âHello?â I whispered into the vast expanse of nothingness. The sound echoing off nothing before bouncing back to me sharp as a knife. As if the walls surrounding me were incredibly close. Yet every step I took was met with endless amounts of space.
âYou havenât built anything yet.â A strange low voice echoed off the invisible walls but whispered into my mind. The sensation of the two dichotic tones made me shiver as goosebumps raised on my arms.
I looked down, marveling at my body, only now aware there was more to me than my mental self. Despite the apparent familiarity of being somewhere without my body. Part of me screamed out that this body isnât my real one. But, it felt so real. In another entirely different way, this body felt like it belonged to me this whole time.
âI donât understand,â I said, talking into the void. My voice echoed back.
âThis is your universe. Build it.â The voice came back sharply this time. Each echo made my body tremble slightly.
I closed my eyes, trying to imagine the vampire realm, the view of the mountain next to the pool. Forests were shrouded by thick fog off in the distance, as the twin moons danced across the night sky. I could almost smell the fresh bite of the crisp mountain moonlit air tickling against my nose. I gasped, opening my eyes, finding my vision materialized with complete detail.
I heard the click of a door, and I turned my head. Jace was walking out, dressed in a full suit. His dark hair was neatly arranged at the top of his head. Even his short beard looked freshly trimmed for the occasion. I went to move towards him, but my feet refused.
âIâm not him,â Jace said, coming to a halt a few feet from me. âI used his body since it was so vivid in your memories. I tried to clean the avatar up a little, making everything more business-appropriate. Since that is what we must discuss, isnât it Morrigan?â
Despite the tone being an exact match for Jace, none of the words were spoken with the inflection I had come to know from him.
âI donât know whatâs going on,â I said slowly.
âYou get the major upgrade. Mortal to celestial. Eventual access back here, beyond the veil.â The anti-Jace said as if it cleared anything up.
âSo, youâre telling me my soul is beyond the veil. As in the same place, soul cores go when souls fracture?â
Anti-Jace, I think Iâm going to call him AJ, put his finger to his mouth as if he was thinking. Overdramatic and a quick temper with extreme mood swings is what I was getting so far.
âNo, soul cores do not go beyond the veil; they go in it. They go to a place filled with monsters, void of their memories. The fragments contain all the memories of each of their lives. When that part is broken off, all that remains is a ball of energy. The ball of power is the very essence of that being.
